Step 4: Where Internet Censorship Happens
Internet filtering usually takes place at one of five locations:
- On the device you are using;
- At the access point through which you are connecting to the Internet;
- Somewhere within your ISP’s network;
- At the point where your Internet traffic leaves the country;
- On the server from which you are requesting content.
A national censorship regime might have influence over any of these, though we typically focus on (3) and (4) when discussing state-level filtering.
